Haugen: Braek & Hanson Lineage

Caroline Hanson Haugen's parents were Hans Hanson and Anne Marie Brack (pictured on right with children Robert, Inga Hovde, Caroline (George)Haugen, and Anna (Ole) Rinholen). Inga Hovde, and Anna Rinholen. Robert came from Norway first in the 1880s. The rest of the family came later and the "Rinholen" farm in Wisconsin was the farm the Hansons purchased in 1888. Robert moved with his family to Texas around 1905. Additional photo of Anne and Hans later in life below family picture.

Iver
Toresson Braek was Caroline Hanson Haugen's uncle (assuming Anne Marie's brother), so his children were her cousins. Pictured below are Iver T. Brack (credit MN Historical Society) and all his seven kids (Otto, Iver, Ingebrigt, Tore, Ola, and Ronnaug B. Lund) except the eighth one who died in childhood). Anne Olsdotter Brack died in 1908 and is thus not in the picture since it was taken in 1918. Otto Brack is in the back row farthest to the left. Otto was the owner of the horse shoeing, repairing, and carriage painting business from additional pictures below.

Information from Cathleen Hanson Mayer (5/26/2014 from geni.com) Iver was born in 1833.Son of Tore Toresson Slette and Rønnaug Iversdotter Slette Husband of Anne Olsdotter Bræk Father of Ola Iversson Bræk, I; Tore Iversson Brack; Ingebrigt Iversson Bræk; Iver Iversson Bræk; Ola Iversson Bræk, II and 3 others Brother of Iver Toresson Kummen, I; Tore Toresson Slette; Iver Toresson Slette, II; Goro Toresdotter Slette; Børre Toresson Horten and 1 other Half brother of Kari Iversdotter Krogstad and Anne Iversdotter Lund. I'm still trying to figure out the relation between Anne Marie and Iver.

Cathleen Hanson Meyer (11/27/2015) noted in a Facebook message to me that Robert (Rasmus) Hanson died in 1926 not 1958 and his wife's name was Lena not Lina.

O.I. Brack Horse Shoeing, Repairing, and Carriage Painting at 531 Greenwood Avenue, St. Paul, MN circa 1890. This is what that location looks like now according to Google maps.

  1. Anne Marie was Iver's sister-in-law--he married her sister.

  2. Iver Toresson Brack was my great-great grandfather. My records show he was born in 1833, not 1883.

  3. Thanks Mary Beth! That makes sense. I will correct that mistake. How did you find this blog?

    1. Hello again,

Just wanted to reiterate (and I wasn't very clear about it)--Iver Toresson Brack was not Anne Marie's brother but he was her brother-in-law. He married her sister Anne Olsdatter Brack. Anne and Iver immigrated in later life after most of their children had already immigrated. They lived in Dunn County, Wisconsin, settling close to most of their children and families. My great-grandfather Ingebrigt (Bert) Brack and his brother Otto were the only two to move to St. Paul. My grandfather is Lawrence Roy Brack, and my mother is Marjorie May Brack White.

    2. Hello,
I'm a relative too- Iver E. Brack was my great grandfather. I have the same photo of Anne and her husband- my grandmother told me Anne was her grandmother's sister. I also have the photo of Iver and his children.
Just wanted to say it was fun seeing the photos and finding new information.

  4. Hi--I thought I just published my reply but can't see it now. Hmmm...I will answer your question again. I found the blog by "googling" Iver Toresson Brack, if I remember correctly. I love what you've done on the blog and thank you for doing this.

  6. So...if I'm understanding you correcting Anne Marie and Anne Olsdatter were sisters...was that common? To have to name siblings with the same first name but a different middle name? That's what threw me!

    1. Yes, they were sisters. I think it was common back in those days to give two children similar names...one Anne, one Anne Marie (Anne was the eldest and inherited her parents' farm. Iver took her last name when he married her, which sometimes happened. Iver and Anne Brack have two sons with the same name, but one son went by Otto. I think naming was a bit more fluid back then, with lots of nicknaming going on. For example, both of my Brack grandparents changed their middle names when they were adults simply because they didn't like them!

I was born in St. Paul and lived there until I was 8 years old. My mother, Marjorie Brack White, died in 1956 from acute leukemia. My father Leo White remarried and moved the family to San Diego, California. We four kids spent a lot of time in the summers with our Brack grandparents in Minnesota, and I lived with them during my junior year of high school. I now live in Bozeman, Montana.

  7. I thought of something else you may be interested in knowing about naming: the name Brack came from the original farm in Norway--it was actually the name of the farm. A cousin from St. Paul, Bill Bowler, has done a lot of research on the family and wrote this:
" In Norway the people take the name of the farm they live on for their surname. It can be inherited or purchased. Our ancestor Inger Olsdatter Brack's only brother died young and she inherited the farm. Her oldest daughter (Anne) also inherited the farm having no brothers...our great-grandfather Iver Toreson Slette married Anne Brack and they lived on that farm."

Bill's sister Mary Bowler Furth has been to Norway and visited the farm. The house is very old but still inhabited.

Bill and Mary are actually my mother's first cousins: my grandfather Lawrence Brack and their mother Elsie Brack Bowler are siblings.

  8. Hello all you cousins from Nerjordet, Primrusten (Brimrusten), Brekk (Braeck), etc.!

My name is Torgeir Teigum and I'm the owner of the Nerjordet, Brimrusten, and Trædet farms in Bråtå, Skjåk. Some of the old houses are still standing, and we've been visited by Bob Mikulak and his wife and daughters approx 11 years ago, and by Cathleen Hanson Meyer and her sons a few years ago. We spend our Easter and summer holidays at the farm, and sometimes in October to "winterize" the property. You are all welcome to come an visit.
By the way, I see that Hans Rasmussen has become Hans Hanson.

    Kind regards,

    Thor
