Nobel Prize winner in the family!

robert-mikulak-alumnus-opcw-nobel-peace-prize-mainHamline alumnus Robert Mikulak '64 has dedicated his career to stopping the proliferation of chemical weapons with the ultimate goal of eradicating them altogether. He is at the forefront of that work on a global stage in his role as the United States Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) located in The Hague, The Netherlands. The OPCW recently received one of the highest honors in the international community when it was awarded the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Ambassador Mikulak was welcomed back to Hamline in the spring of 2013 to deliver the 14th Annual 3M/Ronald A. Mitsch Lecture in Chemistry. In his address, “Recent Developments in the Peaceful Use of Chemistry: Eliminating the Chemical Weapons Threat," Mikulak spoke about the obstacles and challenges he encounters in his work.

“There is a treaty that prohibits chemical weapons such as nerve gas and mustard gas. I actually helped negotiate the treaty that we are now trying to enforce. We want the elimination of chemical weapons around the world,” Ambassador Mikulak said.

Ambassador Mikulak received his undergraduate education at Hamline and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Hamline. He previously served in the State Department and the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in a series of increasingly responsible positions related to the prohibition of chemical and biological weapons. During the decade-long negotiation of the 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention, he was the deputy U.S. negotiator and senior U.S. expert. In 1992, Ambassador Mikulak received the Hillard Roderick Prize in Arms Control from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The 3M/Ronald A. Mitsch Lectures in Chemistry are part of the 3M/Ronald A. Mitsch Endowed Fund in Chemistry, established in 1998 by the 3M Foundation in recognition and appreciation of Dr. Mitsch. Mitsch, a 1956 graduate of Hamline University’s College of Liberal Arts, began his career at 3M in 1960 as a research chemist and earned 19 patents. In 1998, he retired from 3M as vice chairman of the board and executive vice president of the industrial and consumer sector, corporate services. Mitsch is a Hamline University life trustee. The 3M/Ronald A. Mitsch Endowed Fund is intended to promote new connections and pioneering efforts between education and industry as an essential basis for the education of chemists who are prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century and beyond.

Haugen: George & Caroline Haugen's Children circa 1917

The Haugen siblings (L to R): Robert, Dorothy, Ruth, Inez, Oliver, and Marie
Helen was apparently not in this picture because she was very sensitive to the sun. I'm guessing this picture is from either 1916 or 1917.

Haugen: Slombhaugen in Norway

The above photo is of Slomhaugen where my George Haugen grew up. George left his name Jorgen behind when he came to America. The house on the left of the picture was built by Jorgen Slomhaugen around 1900 before he traveled to America. I'm unclear as to whether George himself built this house or if it was built by his father. Does anyone know? Thank you Mary Ann for copying it. It was a gift from Cousin Karl who visited Minnesota last October.
The Mikulaks (Robert, Gunnel, Lena and Anna) took a trip to Sweden and Norway in July 2007. They were lucky enough to get to see the farms where both Grandpa George Haugen and Grandma Caroline Haugen (née Hanson) were born and lived until they emigrated. Below are a few pictures. Slombhaugen, the Haugen family farm, located near Vågåmo and Randsverk, in Vågå municipality, in Oppland county, in Norway. The farm is still owned by Haugen descendants who are descended from Grandpa George Haugen’s nephew Oddmund Kleiven. Nerjordet, the Hanson family farm, located near Bråtå, in Skjåk municipality, in Oppland county, in Norway. The farm is owned by a distant relation, Torgeir Teigum, who is about a fifth cousin to Bob Mikulak (son of Inez, daughter of George and Caroline).

Haugen: Braek & Hanson Lineage

Caroline Hanson Haugen's parents were Hans Hanson and Anne Marie Brack (pictured on right with children Robert, Inga Hovde, Caroline (George)Haugen, and Anna (Ole) Rinholen). Inga Hovde, and Anna Rinholen. Robert came from Norway first in the 1880s. The rest of the family came later and the "Rinholen" farm in Wisconsin was the farm the Hansons purchased in 1888. Robert moved with his family to Texas around 1905. Additional photo of Anne and Hans later in life below family picture.

Iver
Toresson Braek was Caroline Hanson Haugen's uncle (assuming Anne Marie's brother), so his children were her cousins. Pictured below are Iver T. Brack (credit MN Historical Society) and all his seven kids (Otto, Iver, Ingebrigt, Tore, Ola, and Ronnaug B. Lund) except the eighth one who died in childhood). Anne Olsdotter Brack died in 1908 and is thus not in the picture since it was taken in 1918. Otto Brack is in the back row farthest to the left. Otto was the owner of the horse shoeing, repairing, and carriage painting business from additional pictures below.

Information from Cathleen Hanson Mayer (5/26/2014 from geni.com) Iver was born in 1833.Son of Tore Toresson Slette and Rønnaug Iversdotter Slette Husband of Anne Olsdotter Bræk Father of Ola Iversson Bræk, I; Tore Iversson Brack; Ingebrigt Iversson Bræk; Iver Iversson Bræk; Ola Iversson Bræk, II and 3 others Brother of Iver Toresson Kummen, I; Tore Toresson Slette; Iver Toresson Slette, II; Goro Toresdotter Slette; Børre Toresson Horten and 1 other Half brother of Kari Iversdotter Krogstad and Anne Iversdotter Lund. I'm still trying to figure out the relation between Anne Marie and Iver.

Cathleen Hanson Meyer (11/27/2015) noted in a Facebook message to me that Robert (Rasmus) Hanson died in 1926 not 1958 and his wife's name was Lena not Lina.

O.I. Brack Horse Shoeing, Repairing, and Carriage Painting at 531 Greenwood Avenue, St. Paul, MN circa 1890. This is what that location looks like now according to Google maps.

Haugen: Haugen Family Blog

Rather than re-invent the wheel, I'll just attach the blog I started in 2005 and last entered in 2008 here and will add updates on this blog when I gather them.
